Garden Design

Having your own outdoor space is important for your well-being. As a lot of us spend much of our time running around in our everyday lives, the ‘Room Outside’ doesn’t always get the attention it needs, to give you the space you need. However, Karen, the Designer of Bishops Gardening Services, understands and values the social spaces that embrace excitement, tranquility, memory, sustainability and nature. She knows firsthand how the smells, sounds, aesthetics and ambience of an environment can evoke memories that last.

What evokes your memories and gives you a feeling of excitement, tranquility or inspiration? At Bishops Gardening Services we guide you to find out what matters most to you, to design your garden in to a space that makes you feel at home. Below is the process we follow to get there, contact us to make your dream garden a reality.

The Design Process

Creating a picture

  • This is an opportunity to discuss, what the garden should feel like and how it should function. We use a survey to capture the detail we need to design the garden, from understanding who will use the garden and how, your style and planting preferences, to the budget and project timescales.

  • Then we gather the site characteristics, including soil type, the sunny and shady spots, and any constraints. In addition we take accurate measurements and layout of the space, and existing features such as buildings, trees, and utilities.

  • From the information we obtain we build a picture or concept of a garden we think will work for you. We put all this visual information together for you to look at, this may include sketches, mood boards or digital images, to show the overall look and feel we propose for the garden.

Designing the detail

  • Once the concept is approved, we develop the design through detailed layout plans, planting layouts, material selections, and specifications for any structures or features to be included. The design is reviewed with you, and minor adjustments are made to your satisfaction.

  • We don’t all visualise drawings in the same way so a scaled model can be helpful to better understand a design. Please let us know if you would like this additional service.

Construction

  • Detailed construction drawings and specifications are prepared to guide the construction process. These may include plans for hard landscaping elements like paths, patios, and retaining walls, as well as specifications for plants and other materials.

  • We help you find a contractor, who will construct the hard landscaping elements in the design, with a package that outlines the project requirements and scope of work. We can recommend a contractor or leave it in your hands to find one, however, we recommend you choose one with landscaping experience, who understands the importance of detail to bring your design to life.

  • During the build we can provide additional support by liaising with contractors to address any unforeseen issues, make design adjustments as needed, and ensure that the quality of work meets your expectations.

Cultivate, Care and Use

  • Once the hard landscaping elements are in place, plants and other softscape features are purchased, prepared and installed according to the planting layout.

  • After the planting is installed, we walk you through the garden to ensure you are happy. We provide you with guidance for ongoing maintenance to keep the garden looking its best. After that it is yours to relax, enjoy and live in.

  • If you are within our Garden Care working radius you may wish us to provide ongoing care for your garden, if this is something you are interested in please read our Garden Care page.
